Bruno Richard Hauptmann was a great man to many people, but to me he was the best son I could ever ask for. Richard was born November 26th, 1899 in Kamenz Germany. He was my youngest boy and one of the most charismatic person in the whole world. He left the world leaving behind a wife and a son. When he came to America he pursued a job of being a carpenter and he was able to support his family. Life was good for him and everything was going well, until the kidnapping occurred. My sympathy goes out to the Lindbergh family for the damage my son has done to you. I know the evidence says he did it, but I cannot see my boy kidnapping a little kid, and killing it. He will always be innocent in my mind. Just because Richard was found guilty, I cannot see how people think a death penalty is a reason penalty. It is upsetting to think the justice system could do that to a family. Take a husband away from a wife, and a father away from a son. A lot of people will remember my boy as a criminal, a kidnapper, and a murderer. I understand why people are so angry, but please believe me when I say my boy was not a bad person. He was a great German boy trying to find his place in the world. His actions don’t reflect who he is as a person. I know if he was here today he would take back all of his actions. He endured a lot of adversity as a kid. His father died in 1917, along with his brother a few months later due to World War I. Richard served in World War I as well. He was an artilleryman, and he served his country proud. During that time he was gassed, hit with shrap metal, and was left for dead. Luckily, he was able to crawl back to civilization and survived. He was a proud soldier, and an even prouder man, and I know for sure he made me proud as a mother. I love and miss you son. You’ll always be mama’s little baby. Rest easy baby boy.
